History Nin - Historical and Cultural Information About Nin
The area of today's Nin was inhabited in the pre-historic times, the first known inhabitants were the Illyrians whose influence in this area was lost at the beginning of 1st B. C. This was the time of great power of Rome, when Nin establishes its autonomy.
In the early 7th century Nin was settled by Croats and became an important center of Croatian rulers and big capital, but also an important naval and commercial port. During the 12th and 13 century was under the Hungarian reign and in 14th century at the Council of the nobility and citizens of Croatian and Dalmatian, Nin was declared as a royal city.

Nin survives in this form until 1409 when he was shamefully sold, with Dalmatia, Zadar and other autonomous cities to Venice. After comes a period of great power of the Turks when Venice is leaving Nin, and he becomes the target of numerous attacks and destruction over the future years.
Recovery and higher economic growth came after World War II, and the other half of the 19th century is gradually developing tourism. With the construction of a modern tourist resort Zaton, Nin experienced its major boom, and in 1997 the Croatian Government declared it as a city.
